There are times when you have the requirement to send a document to someone, and that document contains valuable personal information that should not be seen by prying eyes.
The most secure method to send such a document is via FAX. However, FAXing is old and cumbersome. It is much easier to send the document electronically.
Some document recipients such as banks, brokerage, credit card companies, etc., have a secure upload feature on their web site. You can log in with your account credentials; locate the upload document feature; click on the link; browse your computer for the document; select it, and you are done.
However, if the document recipient does not have a secure upload capability, sending such a document using regular email can be vulnerable since email is not secure.
An alternative is to use the web site: send.firefox.com.
This web site allows you to upload your document to a secure intermediate storage server, and provides you with a link to download the document. You copy the link to your clipboard, paste it into an email, and send the link to the document recipient. The recipient then clicks on the link and receives the document. The document is encrypted on the intermediate server. The link is a one time use link that expires in 24 hours. You can also password protect the document and provide the password to the recipient. The only non encrypted exposure the document has is during the few seconds of the upload or download process. Since the document is encrypted on the server, and resides on the server for less than 24 hours, chances of it being hacked are significantly less than if it would be sent via an unsecured method.
